CarbonQuest was founded in 2019 with only a handful of employees and a mission to decarbonize the built environment through point-source carbon capture. While carbon capture technologies had traditionally been deployed in the oil and gas production sector, we saw opportunities to target new markets, particularly in mid-sized facilities that rely on onsite, natural gas-powered energy systems, and to sell our Sustainable CO2™ to local offtakers.
Over the past six years, we’ve installed our technology in residential buildings, and most recently developed projects in universities and industrial sites, raised over $20 million, and supported initiatives to advance carbon capture and CO2 reuse across multiple states.
As our projects and scope continue to grow, so does our tremendous team. Over the past few months, we’ve expanded across multiple business units. To reach new customers, including both emitters and carbon offtakers, we’ve grown our sales team on the East and West coasts. We’ve also expanded our market strategy and analysis team to actively close deals in food and beverage manufacturing, utility infrastructure, and campus settings.
To serve these new markets, we’ve refined our technology and expanded our engineering team, bringing in talent from industries ranging from transportation to HVAC. Our most significant growth area, however, is on the software side. For example, we built a team to help our recycled CO2 meet strict “beverage-grade” standards when working with beverage manufacturers who reuse captured CO2 onsite.
We also expanded our software capabilities with a new autonomous building decarbonization product that uses AI to further reduce building emissions from regular operations. Further, we’ve opened an R&D center in India to advance our software technology with experts in machine learning and cleantech software.
In just the past year, our team has grown by 85% to 37 people. These new additions serve as the foundation for our next phase of growth, and they have already hit the ground running. We can’t wait to share more updates on how they are accelerating our entrance into new industries and helping scale the adoption of distributed carbon capture across North America.
